Here’s a common scene: an engineer grabs a laser temperature gun, points it at a sheet of glass, and trusts whatever number pops up on the screen. It feels precise. It looks scientific. But in a glass plant, it’s usually a lie. See, glass is a bit of a trickster. It reflects infrared energy almost like a mirror. So, when you pull the trigger on a standard IR gun, you aren’t actually measuring the heat of the glass. You’re measuring the reflection of the ceiling or the person standing next to you.
The “Ghost” Temperature Trap
Most of those handheld guns are set to a default emissivity of 0.95. That works fine for a piece of wood or a painted wall, but glass is a different beast. Depending on the mix and the heat, that number swings wildly. If you use a fixed-setting gun on clear glass, your readings can be off by hundreds of degrees. That’s where the real headache starts. You start chasing “ghost” temperatures. You tweak your heaters, you mess with the settings, and you pray you don’t end up with a batch of warped or cracked product. We see it all the time on the shop floor. Operators try to “eyeball” the emissivity setting to make the number look right. That isn’t engineering. It’s gambling with your inventory.
