When we’re picking out infrared lamps for a bathroom, the biggest headache isn’t actually the heat. It’s the light. Most of those short-wave IR lamps are basically like staring into a spotlight. They’re harsh. They’re blinding. And if you’ve got a baby in the tub, that kind of glare is just too much for their eyes to handle. No one wants a “white-out” effect while they’re trying to relax or get a kid clean. How we fix the glare We handle this by tweaking what the lamp actually puts out. A standard halogen tube just blasts everything at you. To stop that, we use special quartz envelopes and filtered filaments. Think of it like a pair of sunglasses for the bulb. It blocks out that piercing blue light and the glare that makes you squint, but it lets the actual warmth slide right through. You get the cozy heat on your skin, but your eyes stay relaxed. Getting the placement right Where you put the lamp matters. A lot. If you mount it too close to the ceiling, you’re asking for trouble. You might scorch the paint or actually warp the ceiling material. We always leave a decent gap to make sure the heat doesn’t just soak into the house structure. The lamps we use have high-wattage filaments, so they warm up almost instantly. It’s great—you feel the heat the second you flip the switch. But because it gets so hot so fast, the housing has to be heavy-duty. We can’t use cheap plastics that might melt or wiring that can’t take the heat. The trade-off Here’s the thing: you can’t have everything. By filtering out the glare to protect your eyes, the lamp isn’t going to light up the room like a stadium. It’s a bit dimmer than a regular light bulb. But honestly? That’s a trade we’re happy to make. A few less lumens is a small price to pay for making sure the light is safe and comfortable for everyone.
